My attraction toward sculpting is its tangibility. I believe sculptures allow myself and those who interact with my work, to feel closer to the world I construct. A three dimensional object can be handled, used, and observed. It can imbibe an affective fantasy because of our natural curiosity to understand where it is from and where it belongs. We have no choice but to believe in it because it can be held in our very own hands. Much like a costume or a mask, objects can allow us to step into another role, to play with a story and get lost in it.

This is an idea that had been impressed upon me through films such as Rusalochka (The Little Mermaid) by Vladimir Bychkov, Peau d’Âne by Jacques Demy, and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders by Jaromil Jireš. These works charmingly depict scenes built piece by piece from curated objects, creating somewhere unreal among our reality.

I find my self inspired by the oeuvre of the strange, the process of bringing an idea, no matter how absurd, into our physical world.

In playing make-believe as children we learn how to explore new ideas and complex emotions, how to communicate better, and develop an understanding of our cultural/social dynamics. My hope is that creating an object, or a thing that evokes the world of make-believe, would create a place to explore different ideas of what it means to be human.
